Smith arraigned, pleads not guilty

Knoxville — Third-degree sexual abuse suspect Jake Christian Smith, 19, was arraigned in Marion County District Court this morning. He pled not guilty. 

Smith has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor. He allegedly participated in an oral sex act with a 15-year-old female. The incident was recorded on a laptop computer and electronically distributed to an unknown number of people. 

Smith appeared with his attorney, Dawn Bowman. Marion County Attorney Ed Bull represented the State. 

The defendant waived his right to a speedy trial. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Friday, April 19, at 9:30 a.m. No trial date has been set.
