Knoxville — The Knoxville Police Department reports having a suspect in custody, who may be responsible for the counterfeit $100 circulating in town.
Daniel Paul Briggs, 20, of Knoxville has been charged with five counts of forgery. Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada reported that there are at least three counterfeit $100 bills in circulation. The investigation is ongoing into the matter, and if you believe you have a counterfeit bill in your possession, you are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
Details regarding how the KPD was led to Briggs are still developing. Losada said one of the places where the counterfeit was passed led police to those believed to be involved. Through this investigation, the KPD was led to Briggs.
Forgery is both a state and federal crime. The KPD has been in contact with the Secret Service to see if the federal government is interested in prosecuting Briggs.
