Native plant seeds spread

Steve Woodhouse

Knoxville — The seeds being planted today should grow to mimic the landscape of Knoxville 300 years ago. The plants will not reach their full potential for a few years.

"It went well," Knoxville Street Superintendent Dennis Webb said. The seeds were purchased with grant funds from Iowa's Living Roadways. Former City Manager Dick Schrad secured the grant for the City before his retirement.

Next year, Webb said the City will mow the area once a month. After that, it will not be mowed again.

Instead, the wildflowers the seeds are expected to produce, will grow freely. The flowers should reach their full potential in five years. The landscape should resemble the prairies of old.
