Good Shepherd quilters to donate 158 quilts

Knoxville — Woo hoo! We did it! First half of goal completed.

Knoxville Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (GSLC) quilters hit an amazing goal. In only six months they were able to complete 158 quilts for charity. They will be donated to Lutheran World Relief. The shipment date is Saturday, April 20. Volunteers from the church will take them to a Lutheran Church in Ankeny to meet other churches donating also. A semi-truck will deliver all the quilts and other relief supplies such as baby care kits, health kits, soap, sewing kits and other needed items to the warehouse in Minneapolis. From there, the items will be distributed to people around the world.

The wonderful thing about these quilts from GSLC is that 95 percent of the contents are donated -- not only by church members, but also from residents of Knoxville. Material has come from many ladies that are downsizing their households. Fillers for quilts are often purchased at garage or farm sales or are donated by those cleaning out their closets. Old mattress pads, non-working electric blankets, blankets, comforters, bedspreads or bits and pieces of leftover batting all become much-needed fillers. Isn't it amazing what can be recycled to help others in great need?

Regular volunteers include 12 retired ladies, a single mom and her five-year old son, and a home schooling mom and her three daughters. This group gathers on the 1st and 3rd weeks of each month for two days from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. They sew, cut, tie, iron, and best of all, enjoy lunch, fellowship and loving support as they serve. Not all sew, there are many ways to contribute. Some even cut and sew at home!

What started out as a dream by two who love to sew and quilt, has grown and will continue to grow, as others join or attend as time allows. Not all are members of GSLC – anyone is welcome.

Setting the goal of 150 was a challenge set by the Women of the ELCA's celebration of 25 years. Several of the GSLC women thought this an ambitious goal but YAHOO we made it! THANK you Lord God for the generosity of so many to help us reach this amazing goal!!

Well, are you ready to do it again? Remember the second half of the goal ends with another shipment date in October!
