3M Donates to Lake Association

Lake Red Rock — Representatives from 3M, the Red Rock Lake Association, the US Army Corps of Engineers and Central College gathered at North Overlook Campground this morning as 3M presented a $30,000 donation to a cooperative natural playscape project.

"We're proud to be a part of it," Knoxville 3M Plant Manager Tracinda Yaw said.

The natural playscape began as a junior seminar project for Central College seniors Ryan Dursil and Ryan McPherren. Both were at today's presentation and excited to be a part of it. The playscape project includes building items, made from natural materials, for children to play on at North Overlook.

Also in attendance was Mark Deschenes, Commander of the Rock Island District of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Deschenes said the Corps is a public service agency and input into what the public wants is valuable.

Sherry Duey, Operations Manager of the Red Rock Project for the Corps, said the playscape is part of several, long-range plans to include more natural play equipment at the lake. The Corps is also working on its Master Plan. One goal of the Corps is to transition from manufactured amphitheaters to a more outdoor setting. The location of the playscape - which came together after 84 volunteers spent several hours working on Saturday - can easily been seen from a trail that runs through North Overlook. Duey believes it will be inviting for families.
