Estes to perform in new auditorium

Knoxville — Knoxville Schools Superintendent Randy Flack just announced that internationally acclaimed opera star Simon Estes will perform in Knoxville's new auditorium on Dec. 1.

Here is the text of the release, courtesy of Flack:

The new Knoxville Performing Arts Center is nearly complete and agreements are already in place for world-class musicians to perform for the enjoyment of our community.

Simon Estes, internationally renowned bass-baritone, will perform in the Performing Arts Center, Sunday, December 1.  The Simon Estes Roots & Wings Concert will provide a tremendous opportunity for our community to enjoy the talents of Simon Estes and will include an opportunity for Knoxville chorus students to perform with Mr. Estes.  On Monday, December 2, Mr. Estes will speak to high school students about his life, career, and the importance of education.

Details about the concert and tickets will be shared later.

On Sunday, September 29, Doreen's Jazz New Orleans will be in concert in the Performing Arts Center.  Doreen's Jazz New Orleans is nationally known and is making a midwest tour in September.  Because our band students have come to know the work of this jazz band during their trips to New Orleans, we feel it is a great opportunity to introduce real New Orleans Jazz to Knoxville.  Monday, September 30, the musicians will provide a short workshop for our band students.  More information will follow.

Performing Arts Center Open House

An open house at the new Knoxville Performing Arts Center is tentatively scheduled for 2:00, Sunday, September 8.  The public will be invited to tour the auditorium and enjoy a program that will include short performances by the high school chorus and band.  Details will be made available on the District's website, in the Knoxville Journal Express, on www.journalexpress.net and on KNIA/KRLS.
