Offering a few helping hands

OSKALOOSA — They’ve got helping hands.

Cyrena Buschmann and Jackie Carey are owners of Helping Hands Estate Services, based out of Sigourney.

Buschmann explained how the business helps families who may have lost a loved one.

“We meet with the family first and do a walk through and find out really what they want done with things,” said Buschmann.

Next, it’s time to find out if the family wants certain items to be sold. Helping Hands Estate Services do not do the selling of items themselves. However, they can direct families to auctioneers or if they have someone who would want to list the items at an online auction site.

Buschmann also noted that she and Carey are conscientious of the fact that things like newspapers or plastic items can be recycled. They also keep in mind that certain items can be donated to places like shelters or schools. Working quickly an efficiently is also a priority for Carey and Buschmann.

Carey noted that they also do a bit of cleaning of the homes to get them ready for sale. Client confidentiality is also important for Helping Hands Estate Services.

Helping Hands Estate Services will also help those who are staying in their homes to downsize by dealing with any items in the home, noted Buschmann.

“That takes a lot of time and energy,” Buschmann said.

Carey added that they offer their services for limited areas in homes such as attics and basements, as well. Businesses looking to downsize items they may have can also use Helping Hands Estate Services, she said.

Helping Hands Estate Services began this past fall after a visit to Goodwill. Carey explained.

“One day, we were going to Goodwill and taking some things — downsizing — and decided that maybe we could start a business by helping people who are moving to assisted living or just downsizing their own home,” said Carey, adding that they also help children of the recently deceased who may be scattered across the country and wand to take care of their parents things.
