BATAVIA — A woman and three children were involved in an accident with a train in Batavia Monday night, killing two of the children.
The driver of the minivan, Tara Lewman, 25, drove around the stop arms at the railroad tracks on Fourth Street in Batavia shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Russ Morey of the Iowa State Patrol. The van was struck by a westbound train.
The surviving child is 2-year-old Jordan Clark, who was life-flighted to the University of Iowa Hospitals along with Lewman.
Two of the children died in the accident: 5-year-old Kallie Clark and 4-year-old Erika Clark.
"I know the woman was conscious because a trooper interviewed her but I don't know the status of the [surviving] child," Morey said.
He could not definitively confirm whether Lewman was the mother of the three children.
"As far as I know, everything was working," Morey said of the horns and stop arms. "Nothing has been brought to my attention. There was a train on one of the other tracks."
The investigation is ongoing.
