Oskaloosa town square recognized for beauty

OSKALOOSA — Jon Sullivan, executive director of the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group, said Oskaloosa’s City Square Park has recently earned a recognition.

Travel + Leisure magazine's website included the City Square Park in a listing of the most beautiful town squares in the nation.

“They thought it was one of the most beautiful city squares in the country,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan sent in information on the City Square Park in late 2012, hoping to be part of the listing of beautiful town squares.

In discussing the design of the Oskaloosa city square, Sullivan said the forefathers of the area had the foresight to design it in such a pleasing way. He noted that many city squares have their courthouses placed in the center, while Oskaloosa has the bandstand at the center.

Speaking of the city bandstand, Sullivan noted that the Oskaloosa City Band will be performing July 25 when RAGBRAI comes through town. He also pointed out that the city band has been performing for the past 149 years.
