The Sun — Solar flares are a part of life for the sun. While things may look placid, the sun is a seething, active giant.

And every now and then it makes a point of reminding observers.

A pair of recent solar flares were the first "X-Class" flares of 2013. That's the highest-energy category of solar flares. Here's a look at the flares as seen by NASA.
