Severe weather could make weekend return

OTTUMWA — Iowa is on a remarkable streak, a record-breaking stretch without a tornado.

There's a chance that could change this weekend, though, and the storms could continue into Monday.

The Storm Prediction Center places most of Iowa, all but the northwestern corner of the state, at risk of severe weather on Sunday. The risk shifts east on Monday, but still includes the southeastern quarter of the state.

The forecast for Sunday night gives the area a 60 percent chance of storms; the same risk continues into Monday. There are two numbers that may prove just as important, though: 64, Sunday night's low, and 77, Monday's high. Both are warm enough to support strong thunderstorms.

The most recent tornado in Iowa hit on May 24, 2012. If one forms Sunday, the 360-day stretch without a tornado would be five days longer than the previous record.

There's no guarantee of that happening, but there is good reason to make sure you stay aware of the weather situation this weekend.
