Calf has spots that form smiley face

OSKALOOSA — Casper the calf always has a sunny disposition — he has spots on his right side that form a smiley face.

Zachery Edgren, 11, of rural Oskaloosa, showed Casper at the Bucket/Bottle Calf Show at the Southern Iowa Fair. Casper is a 3-month-old Miniature White Park X.

“Casper was 3 days old when we realized he had a smiley face,” Zachery’s mother, Angie, said.

Zachery said he had fun raising Casper and getting him ready for the Bucket/Bottle Calf Show.

“This is my first time showing a bottle calf,” he said. “He’s like taking care of a dog.”

Zachery said he has several chores to de such as feed, water, walk and brush Casper as well as clean his pen.

“It was actually pretty neat and unique,” Zachery said of getting Casper ready for the show. “I plan to do more bottle calves.”

“Casper is going to be going into the ring soon,” Angie said.

After the competition, Casper’s show career is going to end.

“He’s going to be our new herd sire,” Angie said. “We have miniature cattle at home.”
