CENTERVILLE — What do you do when you need to train new firefighters, but don't have a permanent training facility? You bring the facility to them.

Fire departments from Centerville, Mystic, Moulton, Moravia and Seymour participated in a weekend training with a mobile fire simulator. The $1 million mobile burn trailer was brought in by Fire Service Training Bureau in Ames.

The burn trailer is a self-contained fire training unit where firefighters are critiqued by instructors on their effectiveness to deal with multiple fires on two different levels.

"They have to come in and fight fires on the first floor and then they have to advance to the second floor and fight fires up there," Centerville Fire Department Capt. Vern Milburn said. "And then advance back down the stairs and back out."

The trailer simulates the conditions firefighters will encounter in an actual interior structure fire.

Completion of this training meets the requirements for firefighter I certification.
