DeGoey is MDA "Jailbird" Champ

Knoxville — Kevin DeGoey, lifelong Knoxville resident and Fareway Meat Department Manager, raised $2,750.12 and an electronic wheelchair for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during its "jailbird" fundraiser. DeGoey definitely raised the most money from the fundraiser in Marion County, and likely the most in Iowa.

Through the fundraiser, different people are put in "jail" and seek donations from people to be bailed out. This took place at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville.

DeGoey recently received a plaque, in recognition of the donations he was able to collect for the MDA. To receive his "bail," DeGoey called and talked to several people in the area. He added that he spoke to the local Masons, who donated over $500 to his cause.

This was the second time he took part in the fundraiser. DeGoey, with his strong ties to the community and overall willingness to do what he can for children, has also had people in his life afflicted with MD.

"I'm passionate about it," DeGoey said of his cause. His employer, Fareway, is also passionate about helping children.

"Fareway's a real big supporter of the MDA," DeGoey said. He has been with the store for 13 years. With the exception of time away to attend college, DeGoey (son of the late Robert and Marjorie DeGoey) has spent all of his 58 years in town.

"I love the community," he said. "it's a great community."

If he is ever asked to take part in this fundraiser again, DeGoey said he would gladly do so. The wheelchair donation he was able to procure was given to a child afflicted with MD in the Marion County area.

DeGoey has high praise for the MDA, and everything they do to help children and families. He said there are more children in the area afflicted with MD than most people realize, and the MDA continuously offers advice to families in need.

"They're really good about helping the kids," DeGoey said.
