Knoxville — The Handicapped Equipment Lending Program of Marion County has made a $1,200 donation to the Knoxville Morning Kiwanis to be used toward the purchase of handicap-accessible swings for the club's Miracle Playground.
The swings will include backs, and bars in front, to help those physically and mentally challenged children who have difficulty with supporting themselves in a standard swing. HELP is funded by the United Way, and has installed similar swings at West and Northstar Elementary Schools, as well as a playground near Lake Red Rock.
HELP Director Linda Anderson made the donation today on behalf of the group. Construction of the Kiwanis Miracle Playground at Young's Park is expected to begin when the weather gets warmer and the ground is prepared. Project fundraising chair Ernie Smith said the club will have a construction meeting with the City of Knoxville on Monday to discuss the process. Equipment for the playground was received last week and is being stored at a City facility until construction can begin.
