Obamacare Navigators not trained yet

Knoxville — Planned Parenthood and Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa have been designated as the Navigators-Certified Application Counselors, for the 2010 Health Care Law known as "Obamacare" for Marion County. Marion County Public Health Director Kim Dorn says the navigators have not completed their training, though enrollment into the government exchanges began Oct. 1.

The navigators are expected to assist people in the registration process for the health exchanges set up under Obamacare. Dorn said, by law, no one at MCPH may assist a client in the online registration process.

Planned Parenthood and VNS do not currently have a presence in Marion County. There is no funding available through MCPH to have a counselor here to assist.

As no one has completed navigator training, or is fully prepared to assist anyone with the registration, board member Dr. Brian Schaeffer suggested MCPH hold off on doing anything further with this for now. The rest of the board agreed.

If you would like to try to register for the health care exchange, visit http://www.healthcare.gov
