Thieves target vending machines

Knoxville — The VFW and American Legion Halls in Knoxville have been broken into recently, with thieves causing thousands of dollars in damage and stealing money from vending machines.

On Nov. 23, the Knoxville Police Department took a report of a break-in at the American Legion. In that incident, suspects stole approximately $1,200 and caused $1,100 in damage.

This Monday, another call came into the department about a similar robbery at the VFW. Over $600 was stolen from the VFW and over $2,000 in damage was caused.

Losada said the department is exploring the possibility of the crimes being connected. The incidents are similar to a rash of burglaries in the Des Moines area. Both Knoxville incidents remain under investigation.

In an attempt to prevent future incidents, Losada recommends removing the money from vending machines on a daily basis. Signs should be posted to indicate this to minimize losses.
