Knoxville — If you don't pay your City of Knoxville parking tickets, your vehicle registration may be withheld.
The Knoxville City Council approved an agreement with the Marion County Treasurer Monday night, which will allow the Treasurer to hold your vehicle's registration renewal until your debts are paid to the City.
Police Chief Dan Losada told the council that the State barred cities from taking people to court for failing to pay parking tickets. With this act also came the provision that cities could work with treasurers on an agreement such as this. The KPD and the Treasurer's Office has informally had an agreement to do this for years, but the County asked for a formal agreement to be approved.
Losada told the council that his department often has a stack of unpaid parking tickets. Since working with the Treasurer in this way, the KPD receives many calls at the first of the month and the majority of parking tickets have been paid.
