Family to hold reunion at Auld Park for 80th year

Knoxville — A family with Knoxville ties has been holding its annual reunion at Auld Park for at least 80 years, and that tradition will continue on Saturday.

Frank Hampton said his family is originally from Coffee, Mo. His grandfather came to Southern Iowa in 1895 and had five children. They lived in Russell.

The children started to scatter out. One of the daughters, Dolly, came to Knoxville. She married Floyd Reed. They lived on North Depot, which was a dirt street.

The other daughters lived in the area. One was in Chariton, one in Altoona and one between Monroe and Newton. Hampton says Knoxville was a good, central location for all of them to meet for a reunion.

The reunion has become smaller over the years. As Hampton said, "Families grow; they move." Still, approximately 50 people are expected to come to town for a potluck. For the younger family members, games and other fun is expected.

Hampton remembers the closeness of his family. They enjoyed playing cards and dancing. Dance halls in Swan and above the Firestone building in Knoxville were two of their favorite places.
