Plans underway for Iowa State Flag Day

Knoxville — Details are still being finalized, but the Birthplace of the Iowa State Flag will celebrate the flag's special day on March 29.

Knoxville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Larissa Van Donselaar said the celebration is planned for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Action has already been taken to close portions of Montgomery and Second Streets around the birthplace of Dixie Cornell Gebhardt. Gebhardt designed the Iowa State Flag.

Local veterans' service organizations will take part in a flag raising at 11 a.m. Boy Scouts, local legislators, police, fire and sheriff's officials are also expected to take part in the ceremony. A lunch will be served.

Activities are also expected to include a cake walk, face painting, rides and the Mayor's Youth Council is sponsoring a contest for young people to design a city flag for Knoxville.

The celebration will have a 1921 feel. 1921 was the year the Gebhardt's design was adopted by the Iowa State Legislature as the official state flag. Enhancing the old-time atmosphere will be gunny sack races, three-legged races, finding the penny in the straw, arm wrestling contests and a mustache competition.

Mayor Brian Hatch has also volunteered to take a cream pie in the face for the cause. Auctioneer Bill Preston will lend his services to a celebrity pie auction. All proceeds from the pie auction will be used for the Knoxville Public Library's expansion project.

Van Donselaar added that assistance with the event is welcome. Plans are not finalized. We'll update you as soon as we have more details.
