Harold and Florence Meinders, volunteers at Hospice of Pella, are Pella Regional’s 2013 Hospice Volunteers of the Year.
The Meinders, along with other honored volunteers throughout Iowa, were recognized at a luncheon on Sept. 13 in Altoona hosted by the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa.
Volunteers serve in many capacities within Hospice of Pella. Volunteers provide companionship for patients and relief for caregivers by letting them take a break from the bedside. They help with transportation needs, including errands and rides to and from appointments. Their role is instrumental in the care of patients and families in hospice care.
“We at Hospice of Pella are blessed to have Harold and Florence Meinders as our faithful volunteers. Harold and Florence make a wonderful husband-wife team. They provide companionship, respite care, transportation (with stops at the bakery!), and errand running. Florence also serves as a Comfort House volunteer. It is a joy and a pleasure to work with such a kind and gentle pair. We are so thankful they are part of our team,” said Beth Loux, volunteer coordinator in Hospice at Pella Regional Health Center.
