Knoxville — One of the final steps in an ongoing process to dispose of Lots 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 Block 1 of the Lakeside Heights Subdivision, locally known as 313 Lakeside Drive, Knoxville, was taken at Tuesday's regular Marion County Board of Supervisors' meeting.
The county took ownership of the lots related to a revised Corps of Engineers' Lake Red Rock floodplain adjustment that made it illegal to develop them. The concept was to lump them all together to sell as one (small build and viewing land only) to get it all back on the tax rolls as soon as possible, which the supervisors elected to do by offering them to the public to the highest bidder.
Two bids came in and the supervisors selected the highest one ($3,000). The four buyers, who will be taking title to the lots as tenants-in-common, are: Marvin Bob Dingeman, Tom Dingeman, Rick Dingeman and Jason Dingeman. The transaction was expected to close by the end of the week.
In other supervisors' business, the board approved a 28E agreement with the City of Oskaloosa regarding law enforcement services. Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said Oskaloosa officers will assist in Marion County during RAGBRAI® and the Knoxville Nationals. In turn, Marion County will assist Oskaloosa when RAGBRAI® rolls into that town.
Board Chairman Jim Kingery asked if the Sheriff's Office had similar agreements with adjacent counties. Sandholdt said he intends to start discussing this with those counties in the future.
Gordon Mecham of Pleasantville was appointed to the Marion County Civil Service Commission. Mecham and County Maintenance Director Cal Stephens were the two applicants for this position. Because of Stephens' employment with the County, legal advice was sought to see if there would be conflict. Assistant County Attorney Ben Hayek reported that the office was advised by the Attorney General that while it is not illegal to have a County employee serving on an appointed County board, it was not advised. Stephens likely would have had to abstain from many of the board's actions.
