Stickel named Promoter of the Year

Knoxville — The North American 410 Sprint Car Poll has named Knoxville Raceway General Manager Brian Stickel "Promoter of the Year."

The North American 410 Sprint Car Poll is an annual awards program of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum.  All awards will be distributed in the spring of 2014 at tracks throughout North America. Announcements of winners are being made this week, during the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Okla.

Stickel said he was "surprised" when he heard he won. He was glad to be in the same company as Roger Slack and Tony Stewart.

"The award, it's not just me," Stickel said. "It's everyone who works together in a positive direction that makes the track."

He said he shares the award with the Marion County Fair Association and staff members, including Gary Schumacher, John McCoy, volunteers and everyone else who contributes.

Stickel has been the track's promoter since November 2012. He has been with the Knoxville Raceway for eight years.

At a presentation to the Knoxville Rotary Club on Wednesday, Stickel said the track will soon share more details on a new television agreement with MavTV and that staff is working on long-term plans for all of the Marion County Fairgrounds.

Given that the track is a significant tourism attraction for Iowa, Stickel said the board is going to be more aggressive in seeking state assistance for the upcoming improvements and investments coming to the fairgrounds over the next several years. Former Rep. Dave Schrader has been hired as a lobbyist for the track this legislative session.

Stickel was in transit to Tulsa, where he intends to meet with NASCAR officials about Knoxville Raceway working cooperatively with the Iowa Speedway. He wishes NASCAR and the speedway luck in the future.
