Driver doesn't remember going off Highway 5

Knoxville — A single-vehicle accident occurred south of Knoxville on Highway 5 around 6 p.m. Tuesday night, but the driver does not recall what happened.

Tonja Deahl of Moulton said all she can remember is driving down the road, then waking up inside her vehicle in the ditch.

"I don't know," she replied when asked what happened. "I don't really remember anything."

Deahl walked into a Knoxville ambulance on her own. She emerged while first responders were still on the scene. She said she had some "bumps and bruises," and was shaken up, but otherwise fine.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo appears to have gone off the road, into the steep ditch along the southbound lane of the highway. The vehicle clipped a utility pole on its way down and came to rest after striking a tree. Airbags were deployed.

Deahl said the driver behind her said she was weaving from side to side before the accident. A great deal of unidentified fluid was on the highway, near the area the vehicle went off the road.

The accident remains under investigation. We will pass along more information when received. Responding agencies included Knoxville Fire/Rescue, Knoxville Rural Fire Department, the Iowa State Patrol and the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
