Crash sends two to the hospital

Mahaska County — Steven James Thompson, 17, of Knoxville, and Derek Levi Springer, 18, of Bussey, were involved in a crash around 4:54 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on Highway 163 in Mahaska County. Both suffered injuries as a result. 

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Thompson was driving a 1990 Toyota Camry westbound when it collided into the rear of a slow moving John Deere tractor, pulling a field planter. The tractor was westbound as well. 

Thompson was air lifted to University of Iowa Hospitals. His passenger, Springer, was air lifted to Mercy in Des Moines. The tractor driver was not injured, and was able to drive away from the scene. 

The accident remains under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office, Oskaloosa Police Department and Oskaloosa Fire and Rescue.
