Sex video investigation closed

Knoxville — Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada reports that the investigation into an online sex video involving a 15-year-old girl is closed, pending new evidence or new information. Losada said there have been no new leads in this case for a while.

Suspect Jake Christian Smith, 19, of Knoxville is accused of taking part in a sex act with the girl in Knoxville in mid-February. The incident was allegedly recorded onto a laptop computer by Jordan Donovan Cowman, 19, of Des Moines. Police became aware of the incident when another female, said to be Smith's girlfriend, saw the video and got into a fight with the victim.

The video was circulated by a juvenile female, who has already pled guilty.

Smith and Cowman are charged with sexual exploitation of a minor. Cowman submitted a written plea of not guilty and is expected to be back in court on May 17.

Smith, who is also charged with third-degree sexual assault, and fourth-degree theft on an unrelated matter, also pled not guilty. However, court records indicate that a guilty plea is anticipated from Smith on May 10.

The State has offered a plea agreement that would dismiss the theft count if Smith pleads guilty to the other two charges. A prison sentence of 20 years would be sought by the State.

Meanwhile, Smith has requested that his bond be reduced. In his request, he wrote, "I could have an attempt to bond out so I can spend time with my family before my sentencing."

Marion County Attorney Ed Bull has filed a resistance to Smith's request, citing the nature of the defendant's charges and the physical assault the victim in this case suffered. A bond review hearing is scheduled for May 3 at 9:30 a.m.
