Local hospice volunteer honored

The Journal Express

---- — Harvey resident Sandy Agan was one of nearly 90 volunteers recognized for her contributions at the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa’s annual honored volunteer ceremony held in Des Moines Friday.

Like many, Agan was inspired to volunteer after personally experiencing loss when her mother was served by HCI Hospice Care Services (formerly Hospice of Central Iowa) and after hearing about her friend’s volunteer experience with the organization.

“It’s a very rewarding feeling to be a part of the end-of-life process, and everyone at HCI Care Services is so caring. They really go above and beyond,” Agan said.

Agan began volunteering for the organization 10 years ago after retiring from her position as Marion County Recorder. Local HCI Hospice Care Services volunteer coordinator Rosy Harrington quickly put Agan’s office expertise to good use.

“Sandy is vital to our office in helping with those things that require efficiency,” Harrington said. “When I can call, she never says she can’t come in but always asks, ‘When do you need me?’”

Agan and her husband reside on a Century Farm outside of Harvey. In addition to volunteering for HCI Hospice Care Services, she is an active member of her church, the United Methodist Women Organization and Marion County’s Zoning and Development Commissions.

For more information about volunteer opportunities, please contact Harrington at 641-842-4312 or at rharrington@hcicareservices.org.

“If you’re looking to volunteer you would really be doing yourself a favor because it’s very rewarding personally,” Agan said.
