Knoxville — The South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency (SCISWA) will hold a household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m.-noon at the City shop on North Roche in Knoxville.
SCISWA Executive Director Rick Hurt said that his landfill pays the Metro Waste Authority in Des Moines over $60,000 to accept these wastes from the four counties SCISWA serves (Marion, Monroe, Lucas and Poweshiek). The collection is part of the landfill's comprehensive plan and its goal to keep these materials out of the landfill.
"We'll see what this event brings us," Hurt said.
Previous collection events have been "slow," according to Hurt. He believes this is because people are becoming more aware of the fact that these materials, from residents, can be taken to the landfill and dropped off for free during the landfill's regular business hours. Commercial businesses have to pay for this.
