Candidate filing period begins

Knoxville — The filing period for the primary election of state and federal office candidates began yesterday, Feb. 24, and will run through March 14 at 5 p.m. The filing period for County offices begins March 3 and runs through March 26 at 5 p.m.

Rep. Greg Heartsill, according to information on the Secretary of State's website, is the only candidate to have filed for the primary on the first day for all offices relevant to Marion County voters. Heartsill is seeking reelection to represent Iowa House District 28.

Federal offices up for election, which represent Marion County voters include one US Senate Seat and Iowa's Second District in the US House of Representatives. These seats are currently occupied by Tom Harkin and Dave Loebsack, respectively. Harkin is not seeking reelection, Loebsack is.

State offices up for election include Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor of State, Treasurer of State, Secretary of Agriculture and Attorney General. These offices are currently held by Terry Branstad, Matt Schultz, Mary Mosiman, Bill Northey and Tom Miller, respectively.

Marion County offices up for election this year include one supervisor's seat (currently held by Craig Agan), Treasurer (currently held by Denise Emal), Recorder (currently held by Karen Schwanebeck) and Attorney (currently held by Ed Bull).

Signature requirements for County offices include, according to the Secretary of State website, "2 percent of the 2012 vote for the presidential candidate of the party in the county (contact the county auditor for the specific numbers) or 100 signatures, whichever is less."

The primary election will be held Tuesday, June 3.

Looking ahead to the general election, there are no Iowa Supreme Court justices up for retention this year. Court of Appeals judges Thomas N. Bower of Cedar Falls and Christopher L. McDonald of Des Moines are up for retention.

Locally, District 5A Judge Richard B. Clogg of Indianola is up for retention, as well as District Associate Judge Steve Guiter of Knoxville. The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4.
