Slideshow: Trailer fire near Melcher-Dallas

Melcher-Dallas — Firefighters were called out for a trailer fire at 926 Underwood Drive Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. Underwood Drive is an offshoot of G-76, outside of Melcher-Dallas.

Melcher-Dallas Fire, Columbia Fire and the Marion County Sheriff's Office responded. The south end of the unoccupied trailer was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, according to Columbia Fire Chief John Pierce. That section of the trailer was completely destroyed, with severe damage done to the rest. Pierce believes if there had been more wind, the entire trailer would have been lost.

The trailer was empty. According to Pierce, it has been so since former residents moved out last fall. There was no electricity running to the structure and the propane tank was empty. Owner of the property is Carl Kates.

Cause of the fire is undetermined. When the initial flames were knocked down, firefighters doused the smoldering remains. Both departments reported a return from the scene before 4 p.m.
