Knoxville — A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29, at 9 a.m., related to the post-conviction relief case filed by convicted murderer Steven Dean McGinnis.

McGinnis returned to the Marion County Jail from prison earlier this week. He was found guilty of the Sept. 21, 2008, murder of Robert Ohl outside Melcher-Dallas. The verdict came from a jury nearly a year after the crime. Judge Martha Mertz sentenced him to the mandatory life in prison in November 2009.

The Iowa Supreme Court denied his appeal in 2011. McGinnis filed an application for post-conviction relief the same year.

McGinnis' application for relief indicates that his trial lawyer failed to let him testify at his trial, nor did he try to disqualify video of an interview he had with law enforcement from being entered into evidence. McGinnis accuses his appellate representation of failing to raise these issues as well.

The hearing on the application was scheduled to be held yesterday, but was continued to Aug. 29.
