Gerald L. Carter, age 90 of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday evening, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Knoxville Hospital.
Gerald was born in Marion County on June 25, 1923, the son of Lewis and Verdie (Pitt) Carter. Gerald was raised in the country and attended country school.
On Nov. 17, 1944, in Knoxville, Gerald and Dorothy Maxine Mitchell were united in marriage. Gerald and Dorothy shared 69 years of marriage and were blessed with one son, Roger.
Gerald worked several different jobs and he worked hard most of his life. He started working at a young age in coal mines and later he enjoyed being a truck driver. He also worked at Rolscreen for several years until he retired. After retiring Gerald began Carter’s Repair Shop from his garage. He did small engine repair and saw blade sharpening for several years.
Gerald was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and flower gardening. He was a good husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Dorothy Carter of Knoxville; his son, Roger Carter and his wife Dorothy of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Brad Carter and wife Linda, Lisa Carter and Dave Beary, Wade Carter, Jodi VerMeer and husband Tim; and seven great-grandchildren. Gerald is also survived by his brother, Marvin Carter of Knoxville.
e is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Verdie; three brothers, Delmer, Alfred and Jim Carter; and three sisters, Harriete Chambers, Lenora Carter and Grace Carter.
Gerald has been cremated and a memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville with visitation one hour prior to memorial services. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Greenwood Cemetery of rural Knoxville.
A memorial has been established in Gerald’s name to the Knoxville Fire & Rescue. The Winfield Funeral Home is assisting Gerald’s family with services. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com.
