Marjorie Hanifan

Marjorie J. (Johnson) Hanifan was born in Fenton, Iowa, on June 4, 1921, the daughter of Ervin and Esther (Wagener) Johnson. She graduated from Fenton High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from State Teachers College (now U.N.I.). She did her graduate work at the University of Iowa. Marjorie married Forrest Hanifan in 1941 in Fenton. She taught first or second grades at Fenton, Dunkerton, Dysart, Toledo and Knoxville for a total of 40 years. She retired in 1983. From 1992 through 1998 she worked at the dress shop, Sincerely Yours, in Knoxville.

Marjorie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Chapter M-P.E.O., Mentor Study Club, Friends of the Library, Knoxville Hospital Auxiliary and Pine Knolls Country Club. In 1980 she was chosen the Knoxville Woman of Achievement by the Business and Professional Woman’s Club. She is listed in the Who’s Who Among American Teachers. She loved to travel and traveled in many parts of the world. She also enjoyed playing golf and bridge and doing various things with her family and friends.

Marjorie passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 92 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Forrest in 1984; daughter, Barbara in 2006; and two brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory include her granddaughters, Shari Zander of Madrid, Tami (John) Welter of Mitchellville and Jodi Zander of Madrid; great grandchildren, Casey (Matt Lovett), Jasey, Lacey, Acey, Tawni, Tessa and Sierra; great-great grandson Mickey; son-in-law, Dixon Zander of Madrid; sister, Eunice (Calvin) Vaudt of Fairmont, Minn.; sister-in-law, Lorna Johnson; as well as many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
