Funeral services for Fred Van Ryswyk, of Pleasantville, were held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Melcher-Dallas, with Pastor Kent Peck officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasantville Cemetery. Teri Carter, organist, shared; “Be Still My Heart”, “What a Friend We have in Jesus” and “Precious Lord, Take my Hand”. Casket bearers included Justin Brummer, Adam Brummer, Sonny Reeves, Greg DeHaai, Billy Carter and Wilbur Van Ryswyk. Honorary casket bearers were Ali Brummer, Tatum Van Ryswyk, Carlie Sloan, Sophia Hilsabeck, Skylar Van Ryswyk, Dane Van Ryswyk and Kamryn Hilsabeck.
Fredrick Marion Van Ryswyk was born June 29, 1943, in Knoxville, the son of Marion and Frances (Reeves) Van Ryswyk.
He was raised in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School with the Class of 1961. Following high school, Fred worked for Charlie Cook driving a truck. He then entered the Air National Guard where he served six years. Fred returned to Knoxville and began work for Holmes Oldsmobile, in Des Moines, as a mechanic. He also served as a deputy for the Marion County Sherriff’s Office. On Jan. 10, 1981, he was united in marriage to Junella Maeschen at St. John Lutheran Church in Melcher. The couple has lived their entire married life in Pleasantville.
Fred was active in the Marion County Sportsmen’s Club as a member and officer for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and competition shooting. He also organized and participated in the annual Crappie-Thon. Fred was a great storyteller and he shared this knowledge at several coffee times in Marion and Warren counties. The greatest joy in his life was his family; he was proud of and cherished his wife, children and grandchildren.
Fred passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 69 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Tracy.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Junella; children: Terri (Brett) Brummer of Indianola, Jenny (Blake) Hilsabeck of Pleasantville and Ty (Kelly) Van Ryswyk of Edwardsville, Ill., and nine grandchildren and many other family members and wonderful friends.
