Leonard Mason

Melcher-Dallas —  

Services for Leonard Mason, 82 were Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Melcher-Dallas. Interment was in the Dallas Cemetery. Family received friends Friday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas. Online condolences may be left at www.pierschbacherfuneralhome.com

Leonard Hugh Mason was born March 12, 1930, to William and Mary (Kirtley) Mason in Melcher. He graduated from Melcher High School in 1949. Leonard enlisted in the Army and was in the Korean War where he served as commander of five tanks. On Sept. 14, 1956, he married Joy Merriman and they were blessed with three sons: Bill, Leonard, and Tim. Leonard retired from John Deere in Ankeny after 31 years. 

Leonard was a good husband, father, and man. He liked visiting with friends and enjoyed taking family camping trips. Leonard also enjoyed ballroom dancing and big band music. Leonard liked to go hunting and fishing with his boys. He loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, and his dog, Dinger. He enjoyed working with people. He served on city council and was the Mayor of Melcher-Dallas when the two towns combined.

Leonard passed away Nov. 14, 2012. He is survived by his sons: Bill, Butch, and Tim; three grandchildren: Morgen, Sydney, and Stacia; brother Richard Mason; many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy, in February 2012; and siblings Bill Mason and Betty Larson.
