Funeral services for Charles Van Zee, of Pleasantville, were held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at the Mason Funeral Home with Pastor Donna Murphy-Ceradsky officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasantville Cemetery. Midge Brooks, organist and Miika Busick, soloist shared “The Old Rugged Cross”. CD’s of “Don’t Blink” and “I Can Only Imagine” were also played. Casket bearers included Hunter Starr, Spencer Starr, Zachary Starr, Trey Busick, Brock Busick and James Carl Van Zee, Jr. Honorary casket bearers were Jessica DePaul, Paige Busick, Brayton Van Zee and Lincoln Betterton.

Charles Marion Van Zee was born on July 15, 1916, in rural Pleasantville, the son of Carl A. Van Zee and Carol (Kading) Van Zee.

He attended country school and then went on to graduate with the Pleasantville High School class of 1934. Charles was united in marriage to Flavia Ethel Stubbs in Unionville, Mo., on Oct. 3, 1936. The two made their home in Pleasantville before moving to Dallas Center in 1948. In 1954, they moved to their farm east of Pleasantville. Charles was a farmer and owner of Van Zee Livestock Trucking. He also had sold seed corn and distributed Archer Oil.

Charles was a lifetime member of the Pleasantville Christian Church, member of the Pleasantville City Council, Pleasantville Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau and was a 4-H Leader for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at the sale barn, playing pitch, and his morning coffee at Mr. C’s. Charles grew the most beautiful roses and would share them with his friends around town. He and Ethel enjoyed traveling to Germany twice to visit Bruno. Charles will be remembered as a loving dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.

Charles passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Pleasant Care Living Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel, son, Claren, and a brother, Howard Van Zee.

He is survived by his children, Glenadean Betterton of Pleasantville, Bruno Jessen (Renate) of Hamburg, Germany; grandchildren: Tamra Starr-DePaul (Tony) of Elmhurst, Ill.; Tonya Betterton of Breckenridge, Colo.; James Van Zee (Barbara) of Altoona; Miika Busick (Rob) and William Betterton of Pleasantville; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers; Dean Van Zee (Greta) of Knoxville and Robert Van Zee (Marilyn) of Pleasantville.
