Eldon South

Journal-Express

Melcher-Dallas — Eldon South, 77, of Melcher-Dallas passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Knoxville Hospital.

Eldon was born to Carl & Lois (Glenn) South on Sept. 29, 1936, in Clarke County.  He received his education from Van Wert Schools in 1954.  Eldon was united in marriage on Oct. 30, 1957, to Sue Ridinger. To this union were three children: Debra Sue, Tanya Lynn Jones and Brent Eldon South.

Eldon’s first job was refinishing furniture until he moved to Des Moines and began working in factories as a machinist.  In 1960, Eldon and his family moved to Creston, Iowa, where he took a job at Purolator Filter Co. within the United Auto Workers Union.  He worked his way from packer on the line to the maintenance department and then to maintenance supervisor.  When the plant closed he moved his family to Melcher where he and his wife would run South’s Market for 25 years.  He then worked at Pella Corporation until his retirement in 2006.

Eldon was a member of the Melcher-Dallas Lions Club and the United Auto Workers Union.  He enjoyed playing pitch and cribbage, was a fan of John Wayne and enjoyed watching his Western movies. He was a quiet man by nature around people. Once he warmed up to someone he loved playing practical jokes on them. Eldon enjoyed tinkering in the garage in his spare time. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix with a little duct tape.  Eldon enjoyed many things in his life; the two things that brought him the most joy were his grandchildren and was looking forward to meeting his great grandson in March.  Eldon will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Sue of Melcher-Dallas, two children: Tanya Jones of Knoxville, Brent (Dana) South of Knoxville, two grandchildren: Breanne South (Rick Montgomery) of Knoxville, Delaynee South of Knoxville and a great grandson that will be here in March. He is also survived by two siblings: Delores Heckathorn of West Des Moines and George (Dixie) South of Rogers, Arkansas and his father-in-law Norman Ridinger of Creston. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Debra Sue, son-in-law, Dennis Jones and his parents.

A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas with Rev. Jeff Flagg officiating.  Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.  Memorials may be given to HCI-Knoxville or Melcher-Dallas Fire & Rescue.
