---- — Funeral services for Louise Nichols, of Altoona and formerly of Knoxville, were held on Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Don Hayes officiating. Burial followed in the Graceland Cemetery. Geoffrey Shultz, accompanist, shared, “Where the Roses Never Fade” and “ Amazing Grace”. Casket bearers included Martin Beaver, Reagan Wheatly, John Rosenbaum, Ryan Wheatly, Ken Six and James Spencer.
Louise M. Nichols was born June 27, 1925, in Lucas County, the daughter of Howard and Lillie (Storm) Spencer.
She graduated from Liberty Center High School. Louise worked as a waitress in Indianola and later at the laundry at the V.A. Medical Center. On Feb. 15, 1950, she was united in marriage to Edmund Perry “Nick” Nichols at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville. The couple lived on a farm near Flagler before moving to an acreage east of Knoxville on Highway 92. Louise worked for Contel as a phone operator until her retirement in 1983. In later years, Louise moved to Chariton and for the last nine years she has resided in Altoona.
Louise enjoyed gardening, canning and taking care of the animals when she and Nick farmed. Most important in her life was the Lord, and she was a faithful servant of God. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Louise passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at the Altoona Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 87 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nick Nichols in 1981; four brothers and one sister.
Those left to honor her memory include her children: Nancy (Jim) McCann of Des Moines, Shirley (Jerry) Wheatly of Altoona, Duane Nichols of Longmont, Colo.; step-son, Cleo (Rhea) Nichols of New York City, N.Y.; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and many other family members and friends.
