Katherine Smith

Katherine Schirner Herweh Smith was born June 3, 1918, in Swan, the daughter of Budge and Ruth Schirner. She passed away on Monday, May 5, at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset at the age of 95 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons: Jimmie and Frank Herweh and three siblings: Betty, Elsie and Silas.

Those left to honor Kate’s memory include seven children: Elnor Gilchrist of Ankeny, Phyllis Herweh of Norman, Okla., Katherine Lane of Altoona, Dowell Smith of Waterloo, Joan Smith of Urbandale, Pearl Audsley of Winterset and Joel Smith of Cedar Rapids; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her brother, Ancil Lee Denzler of Texas and many other family members and friends.

“I’d like to say I’ve had a good life being born again June of 1952. I’ve lived an odd life – following the leading of the spirit within me. Not caring what others thought only caring if I was doing the “Lord’s Will”. I don’t have much of worldly goods, but I have a wealth of experience in doing for others”.-Katherine Schirner

A Funeral Service for Katherine was held Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville. Burial was at Swan Cemetery, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Winterset Care Center South in appreciation of the love and care they gave Kate.
