---- — Grey Eugene Carter was born on Jan. 26, 1948, in Marshfield, Wis., the son of Harrison Gerald and Alice Laverne (Knapton) Carter. He grew up in Marshfield, graduating from Marshfield High School in 1966. He enlisted in the United States Navy after high school, serving during the Vietnam War and in the Reserves through 1976. Grey returned home and enrolled in the Milwaukee Business College, graduating with an associate degree. He worked in sales for Jewel T as a district sales manager, and then his own business, Carter’s Wholesale. Grey was united in marriage to Susanne Kay Arndt on April 25, 1992. He moved to Iowa four years ago following the passing of his wife in 2009. Grey was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed the outdoors, and loved to fish, hunt and bird watch. He also liked to keep track of the weather.

Grey passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center in Knoxville at the age of 65 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, H.G. and Alice Carter; wife, Susanne; and step-mother, Lucy Carter. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Tonya (Jordan) James of Reedsburg, Wis., Harrison (Amber) Carter of Knoxville and Kimberly (Dustin) Brees of Monroe; grandchildren, Anna Marie James, Kabrina Kristine Brees, Isabelle Rae Brees, Megan Kelsey James, John Wayne Theodore James, Ethan Grey Carter and Faith Rose Brees; and siblings, Walter (Jeanie) Carter of Georgia, Lance (Maureen) Carter of Florida, Alicia Carter of Wyoming and India (Joe) Reif of Wisconsin.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville, followed by military funeral honors. A visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
