Etha Briggs

Funeral services for Etha Briggs, of Belinda, were held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Heikes officiating.  Burial followed in the Gosport Cemetery.  Musical selections of “It’s No Secret What Love Can Do”, “I’ll Fly Away” and “On Eagle’s Wings” were shared.  Casket bearers included Lee Bray, Richard Fletcher, Troy DeJong, Rollie Bray, Garrett VanHulzen and Nick Clark.

Etha Mae Wiren was born on April 12, 1930, in Belinda, Iowa, the daughter of Vernie Wiren and Mary (Abbott) Wiren.

She was born, raised and lived her entire life on the farm built by her grandfather, Frank Abbott.  Etha was united in marriage to Harold Briggs on Aug. 23, 1975, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Knoxville.  She was a long time member of the Church of Nazarene and attended the First Baptist Church the last few years that she was able to.

Etha enjoyed sewing and gardening and was an excellent cook.  She also enjoyed canning her produce from her garden.  Etha was the caregiver for her family and cared for her mother when she became ill. 

She passed away on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa at the age of 82 years.

Etha was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold Briggs and sister, Ethel Wiren Irving. 

Survivors include her daughter, Judi (Brad) VanHulzen of Pella; step-children, Roy, Gerald, Dean, Lewis and Jerry Briggs, Wilma Bost, Arlene Corwin, Elaine Brockman, Janice Hunter and Alberta Gibson; grandchildren, Sarah and Garrett VanHulzen; sister, Edith (Don) Peden of Alpha, Ill.; brother-in-law, Thomas Irving; and a niece and nephew, Kim Gillette and Todd Peden.
