---- — Sandrea Lou “Sandy” Stearns, age 53, of Knoxville passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Sandrea was born in Marshalltown on July 25, 1960, the daughter of Norman and Lou (Ankrum) Pavlik. Sandrea’s family moved to Jefferson, Iowa, when she was very young. She was raised in Jefferson and she graduated from Jefferson High School.
Sandy excelled in education and was a student of health care all her life. She began her post education attending and graduating from Grandview College with her Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1983. In 1990, she received her Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from Drake University. She completed a one-year fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Iowa in 1991. In 2000, she received her Family Nurse Practitioner Post Masters Certificate from Clarkson College. In 2011, she earned her Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post Masters Certificate from the University of St. Louis. Sandy was also planning to pursue a doctorate in nursing.
In June 1983, Sandy began working at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Knoxville, where she continued to work for over 30 years.
On Sept. 1, 1990, Sandrea and William Lee “Bill” Stearns were united in marriage at the Botanical Center in Des Moines. Sandy and Bill have shared 23 years of marriage and were blessed with three children; Samantha, Joseph, and Jacob.
Sandy was active in many organizations. She was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society since 2002, the American Nursing Association, and MENSA. She was also very athletic as well as talented in singing and theatre. She played recreational volleyball, and enjoyed tennis, softball and swimming. Sandy liked to take walks and was an avid animal lover. She was a member of the Knoxville Community Chorus and had been involved with the Community Theatre. Sandy enjoyed and was an active member of the Celebrate Community Church.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Bill Stearns; their children, Samantha, Joseph, and Jacob Stearns, all of Knoxville; her mother, Lou Cory-Myers of Jefferson; her siblings, Scott Pavlik of Ellington, Mo., Shari (Kevin) Scott of Chesapeake, Va., Shawn (Laura) Pavlik of Ankeny, and James (Katie) Cory of Wheeling, Ill.
Sandy is preceded in death by her father, Norman Lee Pavlik.
Sandy’s wishes were to be cremated. A family gathering was held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at the Celebrate Community Church in Knoxville.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, Sept. 18, also at the Celebrate Community Church, with Pastor Andrew Schmidt officiating. A private family committal service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established to Celebrate Community Church. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Sandy’s family with services.
