Jay John Miles was born Nov. 13, 1931, in Knoxville, the son of Harry and Helen (Miller) Toy.

He graduated from Knoxville High School with the Class of 1950. After high school, Jay worked for Pella Corp. and then served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1952 to 1954. Jay returned to Knoxville and enrolled at A.I.B., earning a degree in business and accounting. On Sept. 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Gloria Hoffman in Birmingham, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Jeffrey and Tracy. The couple then made their home in Knoxville and Jay worked for the State of Iowa as an insurance examiner. He worked for the State for many years and later worked as a contract examiner for Georgia, Kentucky and Oklahoma. He retired in 1998 and in 2007 he and Gloria moved to Pella.

During retirement years, Jay and Gloria enjoyed many winters in McAllen, Texas. Jay had also traveled throughout the United States on job assignments and took his family along when possible. He loved following politics on CNN and reading USA Today.

He also attended political rallies every four years and met many candidates. Jay was an avid Hawkeye fan through thick and thin. Above all else, he was a loving and family oriented man.

Jay passed away on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at the Pella Regional Health Center at the age of 81 years.
