Letter to the Editor-Bravo

The Journal Express

---- — To the Editor:

I’d like to take a moment and say, “Bravo!” to Charlotte Shivvers for her insightful column of February 14, “Another View – Breaking Bad in Iowa.” Speaking truth to power happens rarely these days and when it does, it’s cause for celebration. Isn’t it ironic how corporate subsidies for industrial agriculture inspires such little protest in this country? Yet, when those decimated by the results of industrial agriculture apply for any form of public assistance, the conservatives come out of the woodwork to bemoan America’s growing ‘culture of dependency.’

Progress depends on seeing cause and effect relationships and understanding how one small shift upstream can affect entire cultures downstream. So the next time you hear how vital larger and larger subsidies are to the American farmer, remember — that humble family farmer is largely a public relations creation at this point in our history, replaced long ago by shareholders and boardroom hucksters.
