Bull announces reelection campaign

Pleasantville — Marion County Attorney Ed Bull announced on Aug. 17 that he will seek reelection to the office in 2014.

Bull, a Republican, chose that date because he made his initial intentions for the office known on that date four years ago. Bull said his office has achieved much in the past 31 months, but there is still more work to do.

In his first term, Bull has instituted a truancy program to help parents and students. Today marks the beginning of the third school year this program has been active in Knoxville. One of Bull's goals for a second term is to involve all of the schools in Marion County. As for a success rate, Bull is aware of over 100 families whom have benefitted from the program. His office has been in contact with schools regarding several other families, but their truancy issues have not reached the level of requiring further involvement.

Bull said he would also like to introduce another court program, similar to the intensive court treatment initiative designed to help those with substance abuse issues. At this time, his intensive court treatment plan has 18 members and of those, 17 have full-time jobs. Those 17 are on payment plans to address court costs, fines and restitution. All debts to the court must be paid before a defendant can be released from the program.

Bull believes he has a strong record of trying cases when necessary, plea bargaining from a position of strength and treating victims well. The office has expanded to include a victim/witness coordinator to aid in prosecutions. Bull said his office also actively follows up on cases to ensure that victims get the restitution they are due before a criminal is released from the court.

If reelected, Bull said he intends to continue his pragmatic approach to prosecution. This means that he will seek the best option for disposition of a criminal case, whether that be long-term probation or an extended prison sentence.

"Sometimes it makes more sense to craft a sentence that doesn't involve prison, but is more likely to obtain the goals as listed in the Iowa Code," Bull said.  "I love my job, I love the people I work with and for.  I hope to continue serving the people of Marion County for many years to come," Bull added in a press release.
