Des Moines — Sen. Amy Sinclair and Rep. Greg Heartsill will take part in a public forum on Friday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. at Tasos'.
Sinclair reports that the Senate has been focused on committee and subcommittee work. As a member of the Senate Education Committee, she has been busy working on a budget for the state's programs. She voted against a proposed 6 percent increase in State Supplemental Aid to public schools, because she said it is not sustainable.
Beyond the committee work, Sinclair said the Senate has spent a great deal of time focusing on the Iowa Juvenile Home and the Secretary of State. A District Court judge ruled in favor of reopening the home, due to the Legislature's appropriation of funding to keep it open through June 2014. Gov. Terry Branstad chose to close the home when abuse of juveniles there was exposed.
Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz has been under scrutiny for attempting to expose and prevent voter fraud in the state. The integrity of Iowa's elections and the prevention of voter fraud were key platforms to Schultz's successful 2010 campaign.
