Pella —

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is offering a welding class, supported by Vermeer Corporation in Pella.

Since 2011, DMACC Career Academy on the Newton Campus has been offering a nine- week, 124-hour, non-credit Welding for Manufacturing class. Forty-seven students have successfully completed the program with 94 percent finding full-time employment.  Nine graduated from the most recent class and 100 percent found employment with Vermeer.  For the first time, DMACC is hosting the class at Vermeer in Pella utilizing their weld training lab.

“A career in welding provides tremendous opportunities,” says David Landon, Manager of Welding Engineering at Vermeer Corporation in Pella.  “There is an immediate need for skilled welders right now and by the end of the decade there will be a need for almost 240,000 new and replacement welding professionals nationally.”

DMACC Continuing Education Coordinator Darin Stevenson said expectations for these students are extremely high.

“Perfect attendance, a silver level on the National Career Readiness Certificate, passing the AWS GMAW 1G welding qualification, and a variety of lab and classroom performance exams are required,” said Stevenson.

DMACC is providing FREE training to qualified participants.  Selection for this training is not based on income but meeting the required reading, math and welding skills assessment, as well as an interview with DMACC staff.  Priority will be given to students who reside in Jasper or Marion County. Assessments will be held from 5-9 p.m., Jan. 21 or 22.  Go to http://cam.dmacc.edu to schedule an assessment.
