Knoxville —

A new Knoxville After Prom Committee fundraiser may land a toilet on a lawn near you.

At a fundraising idea discussion, the idea of having a traveling toilet was raised by someone who had seen it in another community.

Raffle tickets will be sold at Tuesday night's KHS basketball games for $1 each. Three winners will be selected from the tickets and granted “Power of the Potty,” which means they get to choose the first yards the three Prom Potties are placed.

Tuesday's raffle is a kickoff for the fundraiser. Potential Prom Potty “victims” may be able to buy an insurance policy for $10 to keep the johns off their lawns.

The parents of the Junior Class are in charge of the After Prom. Committee members handling the Prom Potty fundraiser are Chair Missy Lenger, Becki Nichols, Connie Lane, Danielle Bertrand and Mary Jo Sharp.

Sharp says there is a lot of planning involved for the After Prom each year. Committees were formed in November, with each one focused on a particular aspect of the After Prom.

“Our main goal is to create a safe, drug and alcohol-free activity following the prom when kids are not ready to call it a night,” Sharp said. “Upon entering the party, they are not allowed to leave and re-enter. We want to make this a memorable and positive event for our students.”

Sharp believes a majority of students choose to attend the After Prom. Entertainment for this year's event (Saturday, April 20) will include a mechanical bull, obstacle course, a hypnotist, giant trikes, laster tag, a rock wall, photo booth, and more. The party will end with a pancake breakfast.

The Traveling Prom Potty fundraiser will run from Feb. 5-March 15. If you would like to purchase potty protection for $10, call 641-891-4365. Instructions on joining in the fun will be posted on each potty. If you are the recipient of one, you will be asked for a $20 donation to have it removed. Your $20 also entitles you to choose the lawn it will next be placed. Otherwise, the potty will stay for three days. All transportation of the potties will be handled by the Prom Potty Patrol.

“We want the community to have fun while supporting this 'fun'draiser,” Sharp said.

If you would like to volunteer to help the After Prom effort, the school can put you in contact with a committee member. Donations are also accepted and can be made at Iowa State Savings Bank to the attention of Jamie Hollingshead/Junior Class After Prom Party, 222 East Robinson, Knoxville, IA, 50138. You can also show your support by attending the Prom Grand March on April 20.

This fundraiser is not endorsed by the Knoxville School District.
