Exclusive: Knoxville Superintendent Flack to take early retirement

Knoxville — The Knoxville School Board just accepted the early retirement request of longtime Superintendent, Dr. Randy Flack.

As previously reported, the board had a list of applicants who were seeking to take advantage of the district's early retirement incentive. After introducing the agenda item, Flack told the board he had one more name to add to the list.

Board President Leslie Miller appeared to be in shock when she read the name, which belonged to Flack.

Flack has served as Superintendent of Knoxville Schools for 24 years. He told the board that he had been mulling possible retirement for a while. The final decision was not made until last week, when he told his wife and fellow school retiree, Donna.

Flack said he wants to try something new. He added that this job is the best one he's ever had. Once advised by a fellow administrator to not wait to retire until he dreaded coming to work, Flack believes this is the right time.

"I'm in shock," Miller said as the vote was taken. The board approved the retirement requests, 5-0.

Following the meeting, Flack told the Journal-Express that he kept his name off of the previously submitted list of retirees because he felt the board deserved to know early. He will finish out the school year, but says there is much he will miss.

"In this type of business, you miss the people," Flack said. This includes the students, staff and community members with whom he has interacted.

Flack told the board that many superintendent retirements are announced before Christmas, to provide school boards ample opportunity to search for a replacement. The Knoxville School Board will begin this discussion at its next meeting on Nov. 11.

Flack's level of involvement in the search for his replacement will be determined by the board. He offered his advice to the level the board members want and is willing to answer any questions they may have during this process.
