PELLA—Jamie Vander Veer and Timothy Shepherd have been honored for their contributions to the Central College men’s cross country team.
Central captured the Iowa Conference title for the second consecutive season after its first in program history in 2012.
Fifth-year coach Joe Dunham was tabbed the league’s coach of the year as the Dutch claimed the top three individual spots once again.
Following a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Central Region meet in Northfield, Minn., Central placed a program-best sixth at the NCAA Division III national championships in Hanover, Ind.
Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) and Austin O’Brien (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS), the conference MVP, earned all-America honors after placing fourth and 11th, respectively.
Horton received the team’s Most Valuable Performer Award for the third straight year.
Dunham awarded 13 varsity letters with eight letterwinners set to return in 2014.
Shepherd and Vander Veer are both juniors on the team and both are Knoxville High School graduates.
Shepherd picked up his third varsity letter at Central. He finished 31st at the 2013 Iowa Conference Meet with a time of 27:06.4.
Vander Veer earned his first Central College varsity letter. He was 22nd at the Iowa Conference Meet with a time of 26:40.3.
Jamie Vander Veer was 178th at the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship with a clocking of 26:26.2.
